Quick Exit

It can be difficult to know what to do if you’re concerned that someone you care about is experiencing family or domestic violence. You may feel unsure, afraid of making it worse, or don’t know how to bring it up. But reaching out — can make a difference.

Warning Signs to Look Out For

While every situation is different, signs that someone may be experiencing abuse include:

  • Acting withdrawn, anxious, or unusually quiet
  • Seeming fearful around their partner or deferring to them often
  • Unexplained injuries or frequent excuses for physical harm
  • Sudden changes in behaviour, appearance, or routine
  • Avoiding social situations or becoming isolated
  • Lack of access to money, phone, or transport
  • Their partner being overly controlling, jealous, or monitoring them closely

Trust your instincts — if something doesn’t feel right, it’s okay to be concerned.

How You Can Help

You don’t have to have all the answers — simply asking, listening and believing them can have a big impact.

Start with care and respect

  • Find a safe, private time to talk
  • Express concern: “I’ve noticed you seem upset — is everything okay?”
  • Let them share at their own pace
  • Don’t pressure them to leave or take action they’re not ready for

Listen without judgment

  • Believe them if they confide in you
  • Avoid criticising their partner — focus on their safety
  • Reassure them: “You don’t deserve this”, and “You’re not alone”

Offer practical support

  • Help them find information or connect to a support service
  • Offer to go with them to appointments or just be there to listen
  • Be patient — recovery and decision-making take time
