Below is a list of everyday necessities services, including secondhand clothing shops, emergency relief, soup kitchens, safe computer and Wi-Fi access, and government support. Centacare Kimberley – Emergency Relief

Centacare Kimberley is able to offer a range of supports to people on Centrelink Income Payment who are experiencing financial hardship in Broome, Kununurra and Balgo. They provide eligible people with food and clothing vouchers, and can give people access to food items and home starter packs when available.

Centacare Kimberley – Breakfast Program

Breakfast Program offers a free nutritional meal on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:00am – 9:00am to individuals, couples and families who are facing financial hardship and/or are homeless. (Wheelchair access available)

Centacare Kimberley-Homeless Outreach Centacare

Centacare Kimberley works with community groups to give people access to services such as, health and wellbeing support, tenancy support, drug and alcohol counselling, family and men’s relationship counselling, mental health support, emergency relief, and income support.

Broome Public Library

Broome Library provides free Wi-Fi, Internet access and computer terminals are available for everyone.

Support through payments and services while you are looking for work or doing approved studies to help you find and keep a job.

Services Australia – Crisis Payment

To get this you must:

  • be eligible for an income support payment from us
  • be in severe financial hardship
  • have an extreme life change. You can get it if you:
  • are experiencing family and domestic violence
  • get out after 14 days from prison or psychiatric confinement as a result of an offence
  • are a Humanitarian Entrant into Australia for the first time
  • go through a natural disaster not covered by the Disaster Recovery Payment
  • are in Australia when the event occurred, and when you submit your claim
  • are eligible for an income support payment.

WESNET – Safe Connections

The Safe Connections program provides tech-abuse advice to women who are experiencing technology-facilitated abuse as well as being able to provide women (and children) affected by domestic, family or sexual violence with a free Safe Connections phones and top-up credit (eligible clients can top-up 3 times in the financial year).

They also provide tech-abuse advice where they can organise appointments with one of our tech experts.

WAConnect

WAConnect is an online directory where users can search for food relief, financial counsellors and emergency accomodation among other services.

No Interest Loan Scheme

No Interest Loans (NILS) provide individuals and families on low incomes with access to safe, fair and affordable credit.

Loans are available for essential goods and services such as fridges, washing machines, car repairs and medical procedures for up to $1,500. Repayments are set at an affordable amount over 12 to 18 months.

Eligibility:

  • Health Care Card/ Pension Card or earn less than $45 000 a year after tax ($60 000 for couples or people with dependants)
  • Lived at current or previous address for at least 3 months
  • Capacity to repay the loan

StepUp Loans

StepUp is a low interest loan for people on low incomes who have difficulty accessing credit from a bank. You can borrow from $800 – $3,000 with up to three years to pay it back. There are no fees. Loans can be used for items such as:

  •  Secondhand cars or repairs
  • White goods
  • Furniture
  • Computers
  • Vocational Education
  • Medical Expenses

*Loans cannot be used for cash, debt consolidation, holidays or bills
