Kununurra Waringarri Aborginal Corporation – Suicide Prevention program

Through the Suicide Prevention program KWAC will be holding regular activities to promote community healing:

  • Back to Country healing trips
  • Partnering with Gawooleng Yawoodeng in their Strong Women’s group
  • Work with community to explore language and concepts surrounding suicide, drugs and alcohol
  • Connect elders and young people to promote the connection to country and culture.

Kununurra Waringarri Aborginal Corporation – Strong Men, Strong Families

The Strong Men, Strong Families program delivered by KWAC and funded by the ‘Healing Foundation”, explores ways to strengthen the role of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men within their families and community with Information sessions and interactive workshops which include:

  • Goal setting
  • Roles
  • Responsibilities and Leadership
  • Anger management
  • Domestic Violence Education
  • Drug and Alcohol education
  • Connection back to culture
  • Job Ready Program

The program provides support, and advocacy, and will work closely with Aboriginal men to assist them in dealing with local services, including resolving matters with Housing, Centrelink and other local service providers.

Kununurra Waringarri Aborginal Corporation – Moongoong Sober Up Shelter

Offers intoxicated people a safe place to sleep the night.  Clients receive two light meals, showers, clothes laundered and are given a bed to sleep.  The Shelter also works in conjunction with the Ord Valley Aboriginal Health Services to offer a monthly clinic for clients where they also have access to counseling.

Kununurra Waringarri Aborginal Corporation – Miriwoong Community Patrol

KWAC run the Miriwoong Community Patrol which is a Night Patrol service that picks up intoxicated people, and those at risk of being harmed, from around the area. These clients are taken home, to a safe location or to the shelter for the night. The Night Patrol runs nightly from 4:00pm to 11:00pm and also support Community Events outside of the normal working hours with enough notice.

Kimberley Mental Health & Drug Service provides specialist mental health services to the Kimberley for all age groups. The service aims to deliver a comprehensive range of high quality, community focused mental health services to residents of & visitors to the Kimberley.  KCADS provides assessment, counselling and referral and support to people who are experiencing problems as a result of their own, or someone else’s alcohol or drug use. Participation in KCADS services is voluntary.

Hope Community Services – Goldfields Community Alcohol and Drug Service (GCADS)

The GCADS provides services through regional offices in Kalgoorlie, Esperance, and Leonora, and also through outreach to towns in the Goldfields. The GCADS is funded by the Mental Health Commission of Western Australia and is the result of a partnership between Hope Community Services and Bega Garnbirringu Health Services. Additional alcohol and other drug services in Leonora and Esperance are funded by the Western Australian Primary Health Alliance (WAPHA), free services include:

  • Counselling, information, referral and advocacy for individuals and families affected by alcohol or other drugs, including those referred through the courts or police for the Western Australian Diversion Programs.
  • Consultancy and referral services for health professionals.
  • Outreach services.
  • Community education and prevention programs to address alcohol and other drug related harm and suicide.
  • HOPE provides a range of services to support people affected by their own or a loved one’s alcohol and other drug use, and co-occurring mental health problems.
