Below is a list of counselling services, including domestic violence counselling services, youth counselling services, relationship counselling, family counselling and victims of crime and child witness services. If you cannot find local counselling services for your area, you can find state and national counselling support services at the bottom of this page.

Victim Support Service and Child Witness Service Derby

The Victim Support Service provides free, confidential counselling and support services for all victims of crime. These services are provided by professional counsellors and trained volunteers. Services available to victims of crime include:

  • Counselling and Support
  • Providing information and referrals to other support services
  • Helping victims write a victim impact statement
  • Preparing and supporting victims during a court case
  • Helping victims obtain information on the status of police investigations
  • Providing support when making an application for a restraining order
  • Providing information about criminal injuries compensation
  • Helping victims understand their rights within the criminal justice system
  • Providing information on the status of convicted offenders in WA, through the Victim Notification Register

The Child Witness Service is a voluntary and free service available to children under 18 years of age who are to give evidence to a court. Trained staff can assist with:

  • Accessing services such as counselling, police, legal, medical and other relevant services
  • Working with the WA Police and the Director of Public Prosecutions and providing the child with up to date information as a matter progresses through the court system
  • Preparing a child for giving evidence in court and providing in court support
  • Helping a child to prepare a victim impact statement.

Marnin Family Support and Legal Unit

Delivers culturally appropriate legal representation and non-legal holistic support services primarily in the area of safety, wellbeing and strengthening family capacity. MFSLU can provide:

  • Free confidential legal advice, support and representation in court for victims of family violence and/or sexual assault in legal matters including Restraining orders, Family Law, Child Protection and Criminal Injuries Compensation
  • Assistance lodging applications for Criminal Injuries Compensation, Restraining Orders and Parenting Orders
  • Outreach services to communities
  • Referrals to other services for trauma, grief and relationship counselling
  • Legal education workshops
  • Community education workshops to increase the awareness of family violence in schools, community groups and with service providers
  • Support and workshops for family groups

Marooloo Child Sexual Response Service

The Marooloo Child Sexual Abuse Response Service provides support and education to children, individuals, families and communities in Derby.

The program caters to children who have suffered or are at risk of sexual abuse. It also provides education to families and communities.  Although the program operates from a central office, outreach services to communities in the Derby region are provided.

The program operates under the guidance of an Elder Women’s Advisory Group and an inclusive reference group.

Services include:

  • Culturally appropriate counselling and healing for children who are victims of sexual abuse and their families
  • Education, both one-on-one and in groups, that teaches children and their families:
  • How to spot and avoid potential danger
  • How to minimise risk of sexual abuse
  • What avenues are available to them if they are exposed to sexual abuse in any capacity
  • General life skills
  • Training for adults and parents that raises their awareness of child sexual abuse in the wider community, and raises their understanding of its impact
  • Group activities and courses that encourage the community to unite and take responsibility for ensuring that children are not sexually abused

Kimberley Mental Health and Drug Service – Derby

Kimberley Mental Health & Drug Service provides specialist mental health services to the Kimberley for all age groups. The service aims to deliver a comprehensive range of high quality, community focused mental health services to residents of & visitors to the Kimberley.  KCADS provides assessment, counselling and referral and support to people who are experiencing problems as a result of their own, or someone else’s alcohol or drug use. Participation in KCADS services is voluntary.

HelpingMinds – YoungMinds

YoungMinds is a program to assist families living in the Kimberley.

The program is aimed at children 0-18 years, who are experiencing emotional difficulties in their lives or are at risk of developing mental health issues.

The service provides free, practical counselling and support for young people and families for up to 12 months, introducing coping skills and how to develop your individual strengths

Fitzroy Youth Hub

The Fitzroy Valley Youth Hub provides a safe place for youth (6-25years) to hangout, interact and enjoy a range of afterschool and evening activities.

The Hub presents a space for collaborative service delivery and aims to provide increased access to specialist support for young people of the Fitzroy Valley.

Garnduwa coordinates case management, drop-in, social sporting and holiday programs from the Hub four days a week- including Friday evenings.

Derby Youth Centre

The Derby Youth service focus is about developing opportunities for innovative, safe, youth-oriented recreation, leisure and cultural activities. They also offer help to young people with complex needs around issues such as drugs and alcohol, relationships, mental health and abuse. Youth workers can respond to individual crises and offer referral to relevant services.

The Youth Centre offers a comprehensive school holiday program as well as structured activities during term time such as sporting competitions, arts and crafts, music and healthy eating. The centre is equipped with a kitchen, skate park, basketball court, computers, pool table, table tennis table and video games.

Derby Aboriginal Health Service – Social and Emotional Wellbeing Team

The DAHS Social and Emotional Wellbeing Team provides services that help individuals develop and maintain positive thoughts, behaviours and relationships. This is achieved through a strengths based approach in a person centred environment.

SEWB are a team of health professionals that are dedicated to providing culturally sensitive services for the people of Derby and surrounding Aboriginal communities. Staff are able to help with a wide range of emotional problems including, but not limited to; depression, anxiety, anger, grief, sadness and worry. Services are for all age groups from youth to older members of our community.

Department of Child Protection and Family Support Fitzroy Crossing

The Department provides a range of child safety and family support services to Western Australian individuals, children and their families. Contact them for assistance to access emergency accommodation.

Centacare – Homelessness Support

Centacare Kimberley offers support to people who are homeless, or are highly at risk of becoming homeless in Broome and Derby. Homelessness is where you don’t have a stable or secure place to live, so includes people who are living in overcrowded family homes. All people over the age of 25 are eligible for support. The focus of the three Homelessness services is to support individuals, couples and families to achieve the goal of obtaining and then maintaining long term stable housing in the Public Housing system, or, the private rental market.

The Derby service can work with any person who is Homeless, but does have a focus on supporting women and children who are escaping Domestic Violence to secure long term housing.

Homelessness Services offer a holistic response that can support people to overcome multiple life challenges, and are able to provide support in the areas of:

  • Applying for housing;
  • Access to short and medium term accommodation options
  • Referrals to specialist and mainstream services
  • Advocacy and support
  • Access to education, training and employment
  • Life & independent living skills development
  • Access to Financial advice and Material aid
  • Mentoring and positive role modelling
  • Tenancy information, advice and support

State and National Counselling Services Services

Sexual Assault Resource Centre

The Sexual Assault Resource Centre (SARC) is the 24-hour emergency sexual assault (rape crisis) service in metropolitan Perth.
 
SARC provides:
• Emergency services including medical, forensic and counselling support, up to 2 weeks after a sexual assault
• Counselling services for recent and past sexual assaults, rape and child sexual abuse
• Advice for health professionals about to see a patient following a sexual assault 
• Education and training for professionals 
 
SARC services are available to:
• People of all genders
• People 13 years of age and older 
• People affected by sexual assault, including rape and sexual abuse 
• Family members and partners of a person who has experienced sexual violence

Kids Helpline

Kids Helpline is Australia’s free, confidential 24/7 online and phone counselling service for young people aged 5 to 25.

LGBTIQ+ Violence Service

The LGBTIQ+ Violence Counselling Service is for:
  • Anyone in Australia who is from the LGBTIQ+ community who has recently or in the past experienced sexual domestic or family violence
  • Family members, friends and supporters of someone from the LGBTIQ+ community who has experienced sexual domestic or family violence
  • Others who may be impacted by violence targeted toward the LGBTIQ+ community, including professionals.
Their service provides:
  • Professional trauma counselling provided by counsellors who have completed specialist training provided by ACON
  • 24/7 telephone support
  • Information and referral to other services
  • Vicarious trauma support and debrief for professionals
They assist with:
  • Managing the impacts of sexual domestic and family violence
  • Talking to supporters
  • Information about seeking assistance from Police
  • Information on medical help
  • Safety planning

Communicare Breathing Space Program

Communicare Breathing Space program is available to all men who have been abusive in their intimate partner or family relationship and are ready and willing to make long-term behavioural changes. Communicare’s therapeutic community provides men with up to six months of accommodation while they undertake an intensive therapeutic program including individual informal counselling and case management in their behaviour change journey.
 
Providing residents:
 
• Opportunities to reflect and be accountable for their behaviour and the choices they have made.
• A structured program which supports and encourages learning, offers alternatives and assists men’s capacity in understanding and taking responsibility for their violence, anger and abuse.
• An environment where access to information assists to develop positive strategies to resolve their difficulties.
