Social and emotional wellbeing is a term used to describe the social, emotional, spiritual, and cultural wellbeing of a person. It recognises that connection to land, culture, spirituality, family, and community are important to people and can impact on their wellbeing. It also recognises that a person’s social and emotional wellbeing is influenced by policies and past events. The SEWB team offers assistance in the form of:

  • Brief intervention
  • Back to Country Healing
  • Deadly Thinking Workshop which is for Aboriginal communities to help in the prevention of suicide, providing the tools to confront core issues

Kununurra Waringarri Aborginal Corporation – Moongoong Sober Up Shelter

Offers intoxicated people a safe place to sleep the night.  Clients receive two light meals, showers, clothes laundered and are given a bed to sleep.  The Shelter also works in conjunction with the Ord Valley Aboriginal Health Services to offer a monthly clinic for clients where they also have access to counseling.

Kununurra Waringarri Aborginal Corporation – Miriwoong Community Patrol

KWAC run the Miriwoong Community Patrol which is a Night Patrol service that picks up intoxicated people, and those at risk of being harmed, from around the area. These clients are taken home, to a safe location or to the shelter for the night. The Night Patrol runs nightly from 4:00pm to 11:00pm and also support Community Events outside of the normal working hours with enough notice.

Kununurra Neighbourhood House is a not-for-profit family support service committed to providing emotional and practical support within our community by preventing isolation through the development of support groups, networks, education and information available to individuals and families.

As is the case for many north west towns, the population of Kununurra is transient making KNH’s role in the community an important one, reducing isolation by assisting individuals and families as they adjust to the Kimberley lifestyle without the normal support networks.

Kununurra Backpackers has 19 rooms and can accommodate up to 74 people. There are a number of 4 bed dorms, 8-10 bed dorms, double and twin rooms. KMHDS provides specialist mental health services to the Kimberley for all age groups. The service aims to deliver a comprehensive range of high quality, community focused mental health services to residents of & visitors to the Kimberley. KCADS provides assessment, counselling and referral and support to people who are experiencing problems as a result of their own, or someone else’s alcohol or drug use. YoungMinds is a program to assist families living in the Kimberley.

The program is aimed at children 0-18 years, who are experiencing emotional difficulties in their lives or are at risk of developing mental health issues.

The service provides free, practical counselling and support for young people and families for up to 12 months, introducing coping skills and how to develop your individual strengths
