Pilbara Mental Health and Drug and Alcohol Service – Karratha

Pilbara Mental Health and Drug Service (PMHDS) provides specialist mental health and drug & alcohol services to the Pilbara region. Locally based, multi-disciplinary teams are located in the large centres across the Pilbara (Hedland, Karratha, and Newman). Outreach services are provided by each of these teams to surrounding towns, communities and remote areas.

Services are available for all ages.

Clients may self-present (without referrals), while referrals are accepted from a range of health professionals and other agencies.

Pilbara Community Legal Service – Domestic Violence Outreach Program

The domestic violence outreach (DVO) Service is aimed at breaking the cycle of family and domestic violence. This service is provided to the West Pilbara region and works closely beside their KWS service.
The program aims to engage and provide support to victims and perpetrators. The initiative of the DVO service is to enhance the safety of victims and children, to hold perpetrators accountable by working with the perpetrator services in order to maximise safety for women and children and to work towards changes in violent behaviour.
 
Their domestic violence workers assist with:
• Risk assessment
• Safety planning
• Welfare/safety/security checks
• Linking clients to a wide range of services that address their expressed needs
• The service can provide both practical and emotional support for victims of domestic violence. You do not need to leave the perpetrator to access support.

Mission Australia – THRIVE Pilbara

THRIVE supports tenants of Public Housing and Aboriginal Housing who experience difficulties sustaining their tenancy. THRIVE also supports people who may be homeless and those on a housing waitlist, who have 12 months or less wait for a property.

Thrive case managers work with individuals and families to help them develop skills, knowledge and links to community services and resources that will help them to address often complex issues which affect their tenancy.

The service is provided across the Pilbara and remote areas in collaboration with Bloodwood Tree.

The Pilbara Community Alcohol and Drug Service offers a range of services to assist individuals, couples and young people who are in need of treatment for substance misuse issues.
The service aims to engage directly with individuals, families and communities to:
 
• Prevent problems arising from alcohol and other drug use
• Provide treatment support for people struggling with their well-being
• Community support to assist communities in becoming more resilient in coping with the effects of alcohol and other drugs
• Services provided by the Pilbara Community Alcohol and Drug Service are focused on not only reducing levels of alcohol and drug related harm, but improving the general health and wellbeing, relationships, engagement, and general living conditions within Pilbara communities. From the service locations in South Hedland, Karratha, Newman and Tom Price, Clinical Case Managers engage with small and remote communities through outreach trips.
They accept self referrals, agency referrals and court referrals.

Mission Australia – Pilbara Family and Domestic Violence Coordinated Response Service

Pilbara Family & Domestic Violence Coordinated Response Service (CRS) assists victims of family and domestic violence who have had police attend an incident of family violence, which has resulted in a domestic violence incident report (DVIR). The CRS works alongside Western Australian Police, Child Protection and Family Support, and Department of Corrective Services, offering support to people at high risk of violence to build their safety, away from further abuse.

Emergency relief helps people to address their immediate basic needs in times of financial crisis or hardship through material or financial aid (e.g. vouchers, clothes and food parcels). Support is offered in a way that maintains the dignity of individuals and families and encourages self-reliance. As well as financial and material support, we also link people with services in the community to help them address the challenges that are affecting their financial wellbeing.

Emergency Relief is available every Tuesday morning in Geraldton and Carnarvon as well as every Thursday morning in Geraldton by appointment only. Please telephone at 8:00am on the day Emergency Relief is available to arrange an appointment.

The Indigenous Healing Service supports children and young people impacted by child sexual abuse and/or family and domestic violence. It is available to families living in South Hedland and Port Hedland, Western Australia.

The healing service supports:

  • children, young people, adults and families who have experienced and/or been impacted by child sexual abuse and family domestic violence
  • children and young people who are responsible for or who are at risk of sexually abusing other children and or being violent towards others.

By using a combination of traditional and contemporary healing approaches the service encompasses physical, social, emotional, cultural and spiritual wellbeing. Through workshops, information sessions and publications, they aim to:

  • lessen the harm of child abuse and help make children strong
  • support adults in understanding it is their responsibility to ensure their children and family are safe
  • develop safety plans with family and significant others to keep children and young people safe.
