Transitional Housing Program

The Transitional Housing Program will help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with clearing their debt and increasing their savings, achieving a healthy lifestyle, furthering their employment and training opportunities owning their own home or moving into private rental. The Transitional Housing Program will provide their clients with an affordable rental property, along with access to a range of services that focus on employment, education, financial independence, household management and wellbeing. They will work together with their clients to agree their length of stay, and make sure that their clients leave with all the skills needed.
This program is currently offered Kununurra, Halls Creek, Wyndham, Broome, Derby, South Hedland which is operating as Hedland Aboriginal Home Ownership Program

Derby Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation

Derby Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation is safe and secure, low cost, family-friendly, drug and alcohol free service located in the centre of town that can link you in with other services. You can stay for up to 28 days at a time and are provided with two meals a day, guest Wifi, access to BBQ areas and laundry facilities.
Rates are as follows:
Adults $30 per night ($15 for Health Care Card holders)
Children $15 per night ($10 for Health Care Card holders)
Children under 3yrs stay free.

Pilbara Community Legal Service – Housing Support

The housing support service supports and  assists clients to obtain secure, stable, and long term accommodation. Working closely with other services such as Department of Communities, the housing support service focuses on educating clients so they have the skills and knowledge to sustain and maintain their long term tenancy.
 
The housing support service is located in Karratha, Roebourne, South Hedland and Newman. The service focuses on 3 key strategies:
• Breaking the cycle of homelessness to help people get back on their feet, find stable accommodation and obtain employment;
• A better connected service system that will build more connected, integrated and responsive services that strive to achieve; and
• Sustainable housing, and improve economic and social participation of those at risk of homelessness.

Pilbara Community Legal Service – Tenancy Advice and Education Service

The Tenant Advice and Education Service is delivered throughout the West and East Pilbara. The service advocates, supports and educates tenants seeking assistance to understand their rights and responsibilities in accordance with the Residential Tenancy Act. It helps tenants within the Pilbara to have a better understanding about renting in the private and non-private sector. The aim is to helps resolve issues when the tenant is unsure of what to do, assist tenants to negotiate with lessors, assist tenants to fill out forms, apply to the court and/or represent tenants in court.
 
Outreach services are provided to particularly vulnerable and marginal isolated community groups between the City of Karratha, Shire of Ashburton, Town of Port Hedland, Warralong Community and Marble Bar.
